Last week Darley’s Exceed and Excel had the impressive come back boy Reward for Effort claim an all-the-way performance in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield this weekend he had Save A Penny do the same to a handy field of mares at Moonee Valley.
Save a Penny added a good solid win to her resume when she put paid to a handy field in the Keilor Hotel Hcp (1000m).
Having just her 10th career start, the chestnut daughter of Lucky Souvenir (by Capote) began quickly to hold the rail position from her good draw of barrier two under Glen Boss.
Under the kind hands of Boss, Save A Penny, travelled in a relaxed manner when her stable mate Over Exposed, joined her after being booted up by Damien Oliver to travel on her outside. The race favourite Viking Turf Belle was caught three wide from the outside gate and was under plenty of pressure by her inexperienced rider before she got into a nice rhythm.
As Over Exposed and Viking Turf Belle, came under further pressure before the turn, Save A Pennyskipped clear into the straight and although she wanted to drift out a little nearing the line the four-year-old mare was well clear of her rivals to claim a length-and-a-quarter win from Delyara (Belong to Me – Lady Fidella by Snippets).
Selected from the 2007 Magic Millions gold Coast National Yearling sale by Wadham Park Bloodstock,Save A Penny is well on her way to paying for herself in full with the win taking her earnings to $76,000.
Save A Penny cost $100,000 from the draft of Segenhoe Stud and she will be placed to advantage by Dale Sutton, the head trainer for Wadham Park, to keep recouping her purchase price.
Save A Penny is the one of four winners for her unraced dam Lucky Souvenir (by Capote) and hails from a American family that has produced the Grade 1 Belmont Vosburgh Stakes winner, Groovy (by Norcliffe) and the Woodbine Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner, Boston Harbor (by Capote).
